They include comprehensive exams, unlimited office visits, routine vaccinations, diagnostic testing, and other preventive services that vary by plan.

Optimum Wellness Plans are not pet insurance. While pet insurance reimburses you for unexpected accidents and illnesses, OWPs bundle preventive veterinary services into a predictable payment plan, making it easier to budget for your pet's ongoing care throughout the year. And we still treat sick or injured pets — just make an appointment!

What does “included” mean in an Optimum Wellness Plan?

When a service is "included" in an Optimum Wellness Plan, it means that service is part of your preventive care package rather than being billed separately each time your pet receives it. Included services can help make it easier to plan and budget for your pet's routine veterinary care throughout the year.

Because Optimum Wellness Plans are designed to fit the needs of pets at different life stages, included services differ by plan. Check your specific plan details to see all the services and benefits in your package. If your dog or cat needs care with services, treatments, and medication not included in your OWP, those are still available, often at a discount.

Some pet owners choose to add customizations to their plan. While these additions can expand your pet's preventive care package, they're separate from the services in the base plan. Be sure to review your selected plan to understand which services are included and which have been added as a customization.

Common services included in Optimum Wellness Plans

Optimum Wellness Plans are designed to support your pet's preventive care needs throughout the year. These services are included in most OWPs. See your specific plan details to confirm what’s in your package.

Comprehensive exams are preventive checkups that help Banfield veterinary teams monitor your pet's health over time. During these visits, your veterinarian evaluates your pet's overall well-being and looks for changes that may indicate emerging health concerns.

These exams can help identify changes in weight, dental health, skin and coat condition, mobility, behavior, and other important health indicators. By tracking these changes from one visit to the next, your veterinary team can better understand what's normal for your pet and recommend appropriate preventive care.

Optimum Wellness Plans include unlimited office visits, meaning there's no exam fee when your pet needs to see a veterinarian. Whether you have questions about a new symptom, notice a change in behavior, or if your pet is sick or injured, you don't have to wait until the next checkup to make an appointment.

Unlimited office visits mean there's no charge for a veterinarian to evaluate your pet. However, services, treatments, medications, diagnostic testing, and procedures that are not included in your OWP will still incur a cost.

Routine vaccinations help protect your pet from preventable diseases. Vaccines are an important part of preventive care because they help your pet's immune system recognize and defend against specific illnesses before they become a problem.

Dog vaccinations included in Optimum Wellness Plans are rabies, distemper/parvovirus, Bordetella (kennel cough), leptospirosis, and Lyme disease. For cats, included vaccinations are rabies, feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia (FVRCP), and feline leukemia (FeLV).

Not every pet needs the same vaccines. Your veterinarian may recommend additional vaccinations based on your pet’s lifestyle or environment. If a recommended vaccine isn't included in your Optimum Wellness Plan, you'll still receive your plan's discount on that service.

Diagnostic testing helps your veterinary team monitor your pet's health and identify potential concerns before they become more serious. Depending on your pet's age, species, and health needs, testing may include bloodwork, urine testing, fecal testing, parasite screening, and other laboratory services that provide a more complete picture of your pet's well-being.

These tests can help establish a baseline for what's normal for your pet and track changes over time. In some cases, diagnostic testing may detect health issues before your pet shows obvious signs of illness, allowing for earlier intervention and treatment.

Check your plan details to see which testing and screening services are included for your pet. If your pet requires additional diagnostics, some are available as customizations you can add to your Optimum Wellness Plan.

Parasites are a common concern for pets, especially puppies and kittens who are still building their immune systems and exploring the world around them. That's why Optimum Wellness Plans include parasite-related screening and deworming as part of a preventive care approach.

Screening tests help identify intestinal parasites and other infections that may not be obvious based on symptoms alone. When parasites are detected, deworming treatment can help eliminate them and support your pet's overall health and comfort.

Dental health is an important part of your pet's overall well-being. Professional dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup, support healthy teeth and gums, and identify potential oral health concerns before they become more serious. Pets should start dental cleanings with their vet at around 1–2 years of age.

A yearly dental cleaning is included in Active Care Plus and Senior Care Plus Optimum Wellness Plans. Review your package to see what's included.

Optimum Wellness Plans are the foundation of your pet's yearly preventive care. Each plan includes essential preventive services, and your Banfield veterinary team can personalize it with customizations based on your pet's age, lifestyle, health needs, and risk factors — creating care that's as unique as your pet.

Customizations include options like parasite protection, additional dental care, screening radiographs, spay or neuter surgery, and chronic condition monitoring. Every pet's plan should be tailored to their individual needs, and for many pets, that starts with adding parasite protection as part of their preventive care.

What is not included in an Optimum Wellness Plan?

Optimum Wellness Plans are designed for your pet’s preventive care needs throughout the year. Some services fall outside the scope of a wellness plan, including emergency care, specialty care, and services that are not part of your selected package. However, most services that are not included still qualify for OWP discounts.

If your pet has an accident or becomes sick, you can still make an appointment with your Banfield veterinary team. If your pet requires an emergency visit, your OWP includes a first exam fee waiver for emergency or specialty care visits at BluePearl Pet Hospitals or VCA Animal Hospitals (up to $300 value).

Visits with veterinary specialists outside of Banfield are not included in an Optimum Wellness Plan. If your pet needs specialty care, your veterinary team can give you a referral and guide you on next steps. Your OWP also includes a waiver for an emergency or specialty care visit at BluePearl Pet Hospitals or VCA Animal Hospitals (up to $300 value).

Surgeries are not included unless a specific procedure is listed in your selected plan. For example, spay or neuter surgery is included in Early Care Plus packages.

Common questions about Optimum Wellness Plan inclusions

All Optimum Wellness Plans include routine vaccinations for dogs and cats to help protect them from preventable diseases. Your veterinarian may recommend additional vaccines based on your pet’s lifestyle. If a recommended vaccine is not included in your plan, it may be offered as a customization or you can still use your OWP discount on that service. Spay or neuter surgery is included with Early Care Plus. For pets on adult and senior plans, a spay or neuter is available as a customization for your pet’s preventive care package.

Optimum Wellness Plans do not include emergency visits or emergency veterinary care. However, if your pet is sick or injured, you can still make an appointment with your Banfield veterinary team, and there is no exam fee for that visit. If your pet needs emergency care, your OWP includes one waived emergency or specialty care exam fee at BluePearl Pet Hospitals or VCA Animal Hospitals (up to $300 value).
