What are Optimum Wellness Plan customizations?

Optimum Wellness Plan customizations are additional services that can be added to your pet’s OWP to tailor their preventive care. Every pet is different, and their plan should be, too. Customization services are discounted from the retail price and added to the monthly or annual cost of your Optimum Wellness Plan.

Optimum Wellness Plans already include essential preventive care services, such as comprehensive exams, routine vaccinations, and diagnostics. Customizations let you build on those with additional products and services that fit your pet’s age, breed, medical history, lifestyle, and health goals.

Parasite protection

Keeping up with parasite prevention is an important part of your pet’s year-round wellness. Our most popular plan customization — it makes it easy, more convenient, and more affordable to help protect your dog or cat from parasites like fleas, ticks, and heartworms.

With parasite protection, you get your pet’s monthly prescription at a discounted price through your OWP. Plus, AutoShip means you can have it conveniently delivered right to your door, so it’s one less thing to remember.

Your Banfield veterinarian will help you choose the right parasite prevention for your pet’s breed, size, lifestyle, and environment.

Dental care

Dental care customizations are designed for pets who need extra support for their oral health. Regular dental cleanings and radiology can help prevent serious infection, tooth loss, and potential for heart and kidney disease. Both packages include anesthesia for the procedures.

Additional dental: Some dogs or cats may need more than one dental cleaning each year. The dental cleaning procedure includes anesthesia, preanesthetic bloodwork, and monitoring throughout the procedure and recovery. This customization can be added to Active Care Plus and Senior Care Plus plans, which already include a yearly dental cleaning.

Dental radiology: Dental X-rays help your veterinary team find dental issues that may be hidden below the gumline, including signs of periodontal disease. They can also help evaluate fractured or missing teeth, assess tooth roots before extractions, and identify problems early to help prevent tooth loss and support better dental care decisions.

Reproductive care

A spay or neuter customization can be added to adult and senior plans for dogs and cats over six months of age. Spaying and neutering help prevent pet overpopulation and may reduce the risk of certain health concerns.

This plan customization includes the procedure, anesthesia, pre-anesthetic bloodwork, and monitoring — helping you plan ahead for your pet’s care while saving money and spreading the cost over the year.

Diagnostics and screening

Diagnostics help your veterinary team monitor changes in your pet’s health and diagnose illnesses at a discounted rate that can be spread into monthly payments. They can be added to any OWP.

Screening radiographs with consultation: X-rays can help monitor diseases such as osteoarthritis or diagnose injuries. This customization package includes three radiograph images of one area of the body that are sent to a radiologist to review and interpret.

Dermatology testing: These customizations help diagnose common skin and ear issues such as itching, flaking, and rashes. There are two levels of testing with services available for dogs and cats, unless noted.

The Level 1 package includes:

  • Skin scraping & microscopic exam x1 (for dogs only)
  • Skin impression with cytology & stain x1
  • Ear swab with cytology & stain x1

The Level 2 package includes:

  • Skin scraping & microscopic exam x1
  • Skin impression with cytology & stain x2
  • Ear swab with cytology & stain x2

Chronic care support

If your dog or cat takes long-term medication, you can add a customization that includes recommended tests that monitor potential side effects. Periodic bloodwork and urine testing can help your veterinary team ensure your pet's medication continues to be used safely.

This customization package includes:

  • Bloodwork: blood cell count with differential, internal organ function, electrolytes
  • Urinalysis: urinalysis test, urine specific gravity, urine sediment exam

Visit comfort with sedation

We offer sedation customization packages for dogs and cats that deal with fear and anxiety during vet visits or pets that are scheduled to have certain procedures. Each includes two additional virtual visits, so your pet can be seen or receive follow-up care in the comfort of home.

Pre-visit anti-anxiety medication: Pets with documented fear, stress, or anxiety during vet visits can get two prescriptions per year to help them feel relaxed and calm. Your veterinarian will tailor the medication to your pet’s needs, and it’s provided upfront so it’s available for future visits.

Sedation for procedures: Certain procedures and diagnostics, like X-rays, require pets to be fully sedated. This ensures they remain still and calm while they receive care. It helps ensure the safety of your pet and their veterinary team.

Anti-nausea injection

This customization is made for dogs and cats that are expected to undergo anesthesia or have a history of acute vomiting. This anti-nausea medication helps them get back to feeling better sooner.

OWP customizations available for dogs

These OWP customizations are available just for dogs to help support their preventive care.

Canine influenza vaccine

The canine influenza vaccine is available for dogs who have a higher risk of exposure to canine flu. Your veterinarian may recommend it if your dog visits boarding or daycare facilities, travels, frequently interacts with other dogs, or lives in areas where canine influenza is more common.

WISDOM PANEL Health* is a DNA test that screens for over 150 genetic disease mutations and detects more than 350 canine breeds, types, and varieties using a small blood sample. This test provides more information to you and your veterinarian to help plan for your dog’s health, behavior or training, and nutrition needs.

How to choose plan customizations with your Banfield veterinary team

Finding the right customizations to fit your pet and their unique needs starts with your Banfield veterinary team. They can guide you on choosing what will fit your pet’s age, breed, lifestyle, and health history. Your pet is one of a kind, and their care should be too!

A great time to discuss customizations is at your initial visit when signing up for an Optimum Wellness Plan or Banfield Access Plan. If your pet is already on a plan, you can discuss customizations at your next vet appointment.

Customization recommendations can change over time as your pet gets older or their health needs change. Checking in regularly with your veterinarian helps ensure your pet’s preventive care package continues to be a good fit.
