Vet-approved holiday gifts

vet-approved holiday gifts

Not sure what to get your furball this holiday? Or looking for a gift for your pet-loving friend? Look no further. We’ve got vet-approved suggestions to help you start.

Orthopedic beds and other mobility support

If your pet is experiencing mobility issues, now might be the time to give them the gift of comfort. Orthopedic beds can help provide extra comfort and support and could possibly help with joint pain or mobility. Another gift that could help your mobility-challenged pet? Stairs or a ramp to the couch or bed.

High-quality toys

No matter your dog’s or cat’s age, chances are they love to play. Whether it’s games or toys, both can be good for their mental and physical health. For dogs, rubber balls, fetch toys, and puzzle feeders are great options, while feather wands, tease toys, and cat trees are good choices for cats. If you’re watching your budget, the good news is that pets also love simple, inexpensive play. A game of hide-and-eek or a DIY indoor obstacle course with your dog, or a piece of crinkly paper for your cat, can go a long way.

Safe chews

Dogs love bones, but not every bone is right for your pet. At Banfield, we do not recommend real bones for your pet and instead recommend bone-style treats. Not only are they safer for your pet, they can help reduce tartar or plaque and freshen their breath. Bone-style treats are typically made of wheat with added vitamins and minerals, and sometimes contain meat fat. Learn more about bone safety and which “bones” to get your dog here.

Emergency kit

This gift isn’t as much fun for your pet as it is smart. Use the holidays as an excuse to put your dog’s or cat’s emergency kit together if you haven’t done so already. Here is what to include in your kit:

  • Food and water for three to seven days
  • Two weeks of medication (if needed)
  • Collapsible food and water bowls
  • Reflective tag for collars
  • Carrier or crate
  • Extra leash and harness
  • Blanket
  • Treats
  • Comfort toys
  • Pet first aid kit
  • Current pet medical records and special needs
  • Current microchip information
  • A designated safe place, like a shelter or emergency clinic
  • Photos of your pet in case you get separated

A trip to the park or a dedicated adventure day

Pets typically don’t care how much money you spend on them. What they do enjoy is time together. That means a walk around the park, a hike in your favorite nature spot, or a stroll on the beach. Plus, new smells, textures, sights, and sounds can help support your pet’s cognitive well-being, and, hey, exercise is never a bad thing.
