    Dr. Christine Starer-Smith

    Chief of Staff

    Dr. Christine Starer-Smith, Chief of Staff of Banfield Great Bridge, has been with Banfield since 2011. Dr. Starer-Smith is a 2003 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and is a Virginia Beach native. She also earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors from Washington and Lee University. She is passionate about Preventative Care & Wellness, Internal Medicine and the Human-Animal Bond. Dr. Starer-Smith provides routine and sick pet care as well as elective surgeries and dentistry for dogs and cats.     Dr. Carolyn Gilliland

    Veterinarian

    Dr. Gilliland is a Tennessee native, growing up in a small town near the Cumberland mountains. She was an animal science major at Tennessee Technological University, graduating with a bachelor's degree, prior to attending the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Since graduating in 1984, she practiced in Chesapeake, VA, Marshall, VA and Elizabeth City, NC prior to taking a sabbatical from veterinary medicine. During this time, she obtained a MLS degree but felt the pull to return to practice.     Cassandra is a Licensed Veterinary Technician and the Shift Lead that the Great Bridge hospital.     Katelyn graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She started at the Chesapeake Center Banfield in 2012. She opened the Great Bridge hospital as the Practice Manager and looks forward to learning and growing with the hospital. Katelyn enjoys spending time with her family that consists of her husband, young son, two dogs (Kade and Gracie), and three cats (Levi, Oakley, and Oliver). In her free time, she enjoys reading, knitting, and spending time with family and friends.     Bethanie has been a veterinary assistant since 2015 and is now the shift lead for team Great Bridge. She started her veterinary assistant journey at another Banfield in New Braunfels, TX and moved to Virginia in 2016. She loves working with all animals and enjoys talking to clients about their pets.     Jodi started working at Banfield in 2018 at the Chesapeake Square location. For a short time she moved to Arizona, but she has since returned to the area and is now working at the Great Bridge Banfield. Previous too, Helena obtained her Emergency Medical Technician license with the state of Virginia, volunteering for the Chesapeake Fire Department. In addition, she graduated from the City of Virginia Beach 911 Public Safety Academy and Certified in Emergency Medical Telecommunications. Helena’s primary education and career tenure has been in Business Management. In Helena’s spare time she enjoys river life, boating with her husband Brett.     Mary is currently a student at Old Dominion University majoring in biochemistry, studying pre-vet with ambition to become a veterinarian. She is also currently working on receiving her veterinary technician license through Penn Foster online school to further strengthen her technical skills. Mary enjoys riding her horse, Carlotta, on her days off from work as well as spending quality time taking her other pets, Princess (a Maltese), Skyrah (a Bengal/lynx) and Ruca, on walking trails with her husband.     Toree is currently a student at TCC, majoring in general studies and plans to get her veterinary technician license through TCC's program next fall. She has a tabby cat named Max who is normally a sweetheart but kind of a bully around other cats. Although she has her cat, she is a dog person at heart with dreams of one day owning a pit-mastiff and a Newfoundland. When not at work, Toree likes to paint and read.
