    Dr. Christine Starer-Smith

    Veterinarian

    Dr. Starer-Smith is a Virginia Beach native and graduate of Cape Henry Collegiate School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree with honors from Washington and Lee University in 1999 and her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. After practicing equine medicine for 8 years, Dr. Starer-Smith transitioned to small animal medicine and has been with Banfield since 2011. She was at the Landstown location for several years before moving to the Great Bridge location. Her clinician passions include preventive care, surgery, geriatric care and managing more complicated internal medicine cases. She resides in Chesapeake with her 2 daughters, Jack Russell terrier named Dixie, and yellow lab named Abby. More Details >>

    Dr. Carolyn Gilliland

    Veterinarian

    Dr. Gilliland is a Tennessee native, growing up in a small town near the Cumberland mountains. She was an animal science major at Tennessee Technological University, graduating with a bachelor's degree, prior to attending the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Since graduating in 1984, she practiced in Chesapeake, VA, Marshall, VA and Elizabeth City, NC prior to taking a sabbatical from veterinary medicine. During this time, she obtained a MLS degree but felt the pull to return to practice. She has been with Banfield since 2018, enjoying the emphasis on preventive care and forming relationships with her clients. More Details >>

    Practice Manager

    Katelyn graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelor's degree in psychology, and started at the Chesapeake Center Banfield in 2012. She opened the Great Bridge hospital as the Practice Manager and looks forward to learning and growing with the hospital. Katelyn enjoys spending time with her family that consists of her husband, young son, two dogs (Kade and Gracie), and three cats (Levi, Oakley, and Oliver). In her free time, she enjoys reading, knitting, and spending time with family and friends.     Shift Lead

    Bethanie has been a veterinary assistant since 2015 and is now the shift lead for team Great Bridge. She started her veterinary assistant journey at another Banfield in New Braunfels, TX and moved to Virginia in 2016. She loves working with all animals and enjoys talking to clients about their pets. Bethanie currently resides in Chesapeake with her husband, twin boys, and two dogs, Charlie and Hisashi. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and pets. More Details >>

    Veterinary Assistant

    Mary is currently a student at Old Dominion University majoring in biochemistry, studying pre-vet with ambition to become a veterinarian. She is also currently working on receiving her veterinary technician license through Penn Foster online school to further strengthen her technical skills. Mary enjoys riding her horse, Carlotta, on her days off from work as well as spending quality time taking her other pets, Princess (a Maltese), Skyrah (a Bengal/lynx) and Ruca, on walking trails with her husband.     Hayley has worked at Banfield Pet Hospital since March of 2016. Before that, she worked at an animal shelter in Portsmouth for 2 1/2 years. She lives in Chesapeake Virginia with her son, Wyatt, and she has a French bulldog named Ruger, an American Staffordshire terrier named Freckles, a 22 pound American bobtail cat named Mac, 4 ball pythons, and 2 crested Geckos.     Monica has been a veterinary assistant at Banfield since August 2018. She loves the new experience she's gained since working here and hopes to learn a lot more. She's currently attending school and will be enrolling in a vet technician program to receive her certification this upcoming fall. At home, she has two dogs named Izzy and Ivey, and a bearded dragon named Kiko.     Client Service Coordinator

    Kelley has always had a love for animals, to the point that she has been called "Snow White" by family and friends. She has two shelties named Snowy and Streusel who are a bit of a handful. She has a bachelor's degree in business management, and is also well known in the makeup community and is a freelance makeup artist.     Toree is currently a student at TCC, majoring in general studies and plans to get her veterinary technician license through TCC's program next fall. She has a tabby cat named Max who is normally a sweetheart but kind of a bully around other cats. Although she has her cat, she is a dog person at heart with dreams of one day owning a pit-mastiff and a Newfoundland. When not at work, Toree likes to paint and read.
