    Dr. Kate Hilsenteger

    Chief of Staff

    Dr. Hilsenteger was born and raised in Austin, TX. She grew up working at a local day camp and farm, teaching riding lessons, and training horses. Despite growing up with animals, she chose to study history at Rice University, earning her B.A. degree in 2002. After discovering that she couldn't sit a desk without falling asleep, she went to Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with her DVM in 2007. She moved to Portland after graduation and has loved the Great Pacific Northwest. As the Chief of Staff of the hospital, she focuses on ensuring excellent client experience, delivering high-quality veterinary care, and developing our medical team's technical and communication skills. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter, hiking, traveling, and reading. More Details >>

    Dr. Jeffrey Nickel


    Dr. Nickel is a 2010 graduate of Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He received the Dr. E.E. Wedman award for ‘the most outstanding’ senior student recognizing his scholarship, leadership, dedication and compassion. After graduation, he completed a mixed surgical/medical internship at the Oregon Humane Society and transitioned into general practice with Banfield in 2011. Areas of interest include animal welfare, soft tissue and limited orthopedic surgery, and diagnostic imaging. Outside of the clinic, he enjoys time spent with his young growing family and two spunky cats, Finn and Fiona. Personal interests include gardening, mason bee raising, hiking and exploring the PNW.     Dr. Kari Gorman


    Dr. Kari Gorman was born and raised in Napa, California. She graduated from Oregon State University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. She has been working at Banfield for 13 years, but as a Veterinarian for 6 years. Dr. Gorman loves working with animals on a daily basis, especially puppies and kittens, and has an interest in preventive medicine and surgery. More Details >>

    Dr. Brenda Carlson


    Dr. Brenda Carlson was born and raised in Colorado. She attended undergraduate school in Baltimore, Maryland at The Johns Hopkins University and then returned home to Colorado for veterinary school at Colorado State University. In 2002, after graduation, she moved to Oregon and now lives in SW Portland with her husband, daughter and a cat named Margaret. Geriatrics and pain management are her areas of interest, though she enjoys working on most internal medicine cases. When not at work, Dr. Carlson loves spending time with her family doing crafts, going to Girl Scouts, reading, writing and going to concerts. More Details >>

    Dr. Elizabeth Shines


    Dr. Shines is originally from Louisville, KY. She graduated with a degree in biology and a minor in animal sciences from Western Kentucky University. She completed her veterinary degree in 2008 from Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Shines began working for Banfield in Louisville in 2009 and later transferred to Portland. She has a love for all pets, has fostered and found homes for 32 kittens and has a soft spot for bully breeds after her own, Levi and Madison, gave her 12 great years. She enjoys educating clients about the importance of preventive care, particularly the health management of senior pets. Currently, she has a “tripawd” miniature poodle named Leo, two cats, Newton and Middleton, and a pair of chickens. She enjoys hiking and biking, has never met a dessert she doesn’t like and volunteers weekly for Meals on Wheels. More Details >>

    Dr. Victoria Thomas


    Dr. Victoria Thomas was born and raised in San Diego. She completed her undergraduate degree at Oregon State University in 2012 and graduated from Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2016. She has been working for Banfield ever since. Dr. Thomas has a particular interest in nutrition, dermatology and internal medicine, and when not working, she loves spending time with friends and family and reading. More Details >>

    Dr. Giulia Gamberg


    Dr. Gamberg is a New Yorker, born and raised. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Plattsburgh State University before going to the University of Glasgow to study veterinary medicine, graduating in 2014 with honors. After graduation, she returned to New York to practice emergency medicine. When Dr. Gamberg moved to Portland and met all the staff at Banfield Classic, she was instantly sold and made the move into general practice. Her interests include traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, acupuncture, improving geriatric care and alternative oncology. While not at work, Dr. Gamberg can be found hanging out with her silly Rottweiler named Johnny, her crazy terrier, Paco, and treating her equine patients with acupuncture, eating all the delicious food Portland has to offer, and generally enjoying all of the sights and sounds of the Pacific Northwest.
