    At Anacapa Banfield Pet Hospital in Ventura, California, we believe preventive pet care is a way to help enhance your pet's health and longevity. We also believe that each pet is a family member and an individual with unique medical, surgical, dental and nutritional needs. We offer Optimum Wellness Plans that can ensure ongoing preventive care for your pet at every life and health stage.

    As a member of your family, we want your pet to remain a loving part of your life for as long as possible. Our dedicated team contributes to maintaining the health of your four-legged family member by providing the following services: semi-annual exams, vaccinations, heartworm and parasite prevention, senior care, shelter exams, microchipping, nutrition counseling, surgery, internal medicine, advanced dentistry, laser therapy, acupuncture, ultrasonography, laboratory services and pharmacy. 

    At Anacapa Banfield, we are proud of the personalized care we provide our clients. In order to provide this level of care, we prefer our clients schedule appointments. As a convenience for our clients that have busy schedules and for clients on Optimum Wellness Plans, we offer drop-off appointments. You may drop your pet off for the day to be examined by our veterinarian. Then discuss the findings with the doctor later in the day.

    Anacapa is an AAHA accredited practice for over 30 years, and we adhere to high standards of excellence in veterinary medicine. As an accredited hospital, we voluntarily agree to be inspected on over 900 standards for quality care. We are regularly inspected and evaluated by trained AAHA professionals to ensure that we maintain the standards and provide the best veterinary care we can.

    Dr. John Burner

    Chief of Staff

    Dr. Burner graduated with honors from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996 and has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years. He completed a one-year internship in cardiology and internal medicine at California Animal Hospital before entering into general practice. Prior to coming to Anacapa Animal Hospital in 2006, Dr. Burner practiced in a feline specialty hospital in Orange County. He has a great deal of experience and interest in ultrasonography, internal medicine, dentistry, acupuncture and cardiology, and is committed to practicing quality medicine and strives to treat every animal as if it were his own. Dr. Burner lives in Ventura with his wife, Kirsten, and daughter, Sophia, along with their dog, Harper, tortoise, Stompy, and bearded dragon, Komodo.     Dr. Karen Sama


    Dr. Sama was born in Connecticut and received her undergraduate degree with an honors major in psychobiology from New York University. She completed her DVM at Colorado State University in 1993, graduating cum laude, and has since practiced in both California and Connecticut. Dr. Sama’s special interests include feline medicine as well as rabbits and small mammals. After practicing as a relief vet in the area, Dr. Sama has become an integral part of our mission and is excited to be a part of an AAHA hospital offering high quality medical care with emphasis on patient comfort and pain management. Currently, she resides in Ojai with her husband, Jim; their 2 children, Paul and Mae; 2 dogs and 3 cats. When they aren’t keeping her busy, she enjoys dining out, trivia night at the local pub, hiking, gardening and travel. More Details >>

    Dr. Michael Martinez


    Dr. Martinez grew up in Oxnard and attended St. Bonaventure High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree with high honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He completed his DVM at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. Dr. Martinez is proficient in soft tissue and oral surgery. When he is not highly committed to the care of pets or the care of his four cats; Boo, Baxter, Chester and Lindsay, you can find Dr. Martinez singing music or playing his guitar and piano.     Dr. Allison Jones


    Dr. Jones graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science and a minor in Spanish from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She completed her DVM at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. Dr. Jones also studied at the Don Low Fellowship in Ophthalmology where she learned advanced exam techniques, interpretation of findings and mastering diagnostic and treatment techniques. She has a great passion for all aspects of ophthalmologic disease in dogs and cats. In Dr. Jones’ free time, she enjoys quilting, backpacking, hiking and rock climbing. More Details >>
