What’s an Optimum Wellness Plan (OWP)?

What services are included in an OWP?
All Optimum Wellness Plans include core preventive care services such as routine checkups, vaccinations, diagnostic testing, and unlimited office visits to help keep your dog or cat healthy year-round. Each plan is tailored by pet type (e.g. dog or cat) and life stage. To see what’s included in each, explore our puppy, dog, kitten, and cat wellness plan pages.
What's the difference between a saved card on file and a plan card on file?
Saved cards on file may be used for our online pharmacy or for in-hospital services or purchases not included in your pet’s plan. These cards can be maintained on your account page under “Your saved payment methods.” You’re not required to have a saved card on file.
Clients with pets on a plan with monthly payments must have a dedicated plan payment method (credit card or ACH) on file. This payment method can be maintained on the pet detail page, which can be accessed under the “Manage pets & plans” section on your account page.
Why do puppies or kittens need an Optimum wellness plan?
To help start life off on the right paw! Our plans include routinely recommended diagnostic tests, vaccines, boosters and deworming (and with our Early Care Plus plan, a spay or neuter) to help set up your little furball for wellness.
Why do healthy adult pets need an Optimum Wellness Plan?
To help with ongoing preventive care! Regular exams and testing can help you find and treat issues before they become more serious and harder to address.
How do I get the services in my pet's plan?
Most pets receive the services at the comprehensive exams included in their plan. If your pet can’t complete all services then, just make another appointment to come in — because every plan includes unlimited office visits.

What’s a Banfield Access Plan?
The Banfield Access Plan is a budget-friendly package of simplified preventive petcare. If you’re not ready to commit to the level of care associated with an Optimum Wellness Plan, this annual plan gives you initial access to care.
What's included in a Banfield Access Plan?
With the Banfield Access Plan, you get unlimited office visits, two comprehensive exams per year, an annual heartworm test, a 10% discount on most Banfield products and services, and 24/7 access to our Pet Chat™ veterinary professionals (available in most states).

What’s the difference between Banfield's petcare packages and pet insurance?
Unlike with pet insurance, which may or may not reimburse plan holders for services after they’re performed, Banfield clients know exactly what’s included in their Optimum Wellness Plan or Banfield Access Plan. Our plans are a proactive approach to preventive care, with clear pricing and no surprises.

Does Banfield Pet Hospital take pet insurance?
Yes, Banfield Pet Hospital accepts most pet insurance plans. You can use pet insurance alongside Optimum Wellness Plans — insurance helps with unexpected illnesses or emergencies, while an OWP includes routine preventive care. Together, they can help manage both planned and unplanned veterinary costs for your dog or cat.
Money, discounts and stuff
How do I pay for my pet's OWP or Banfield Access Plan?
Once you confirm enrollment, you have two choices:
- Pay once for a full year, then re-enroll every year (with no enrollment fee if you re-enroll within 90 days of your pet's last plan).
- Choose a 12-month monthly payment plan with AutoPay, which automatically renews your pet’s plan each year with no additional enrollment fee.
Either way, we’ll also ask you to authorize a card for Banfield products and services not included in your pet’s package.
When would I pay for services with an OWP or Banfield Access Plan?
Products or services not included in your OWP or Banfield Access Plan are charged separately, often with an OWP or Banfield Access Plan discount.
Wait, I get a discount on products and services not in my pet's plan?
Yes! Your discount is anywhere from 5% to 20% off, depending on your pet’s plan. This discount applies to most non-plan Banfield products and services, including parasite control and most medications and prescriptions. (Exceptions include therapeutic diets and PetSmart services or merchandise.)
What’s the schedule for monthly payments?
Your first payment (plus a one-time enrollment fee) is due when you confirm your pet’s enrollment with your Banfield veterinary team. You can set up your remaining payments for the 5th, 12th, 19th, or 26th of the month.
Details, details: choosing, customizing, and switching
Can I choose any OWP I want?
Because OWPs provide veterinary wellness care, the examining Banfield veterinarian has the sole discretion to confirm your pet's eligibility for any plan, and may recommend a different OWP or options based on your pet's health needs. Puppy and kitten plans can only be confirmed for puppies and kittens under six months old.
Can I customize my pet’s OWP however I want?
OWPs and Banfield Access Plans are package deals. We do offer a number of customizable add-ons, like parasite control and other options, at a discount. Plus, you can even add their cost to your monthly payment plan. Ask your veterinary team about add-on options when you confirm your pet’s package at your first appointment.
Can I switch plans once I start?
We usually recommend switching when your pet’s plan is up for renewal. Talk to your veterinary team to see what makes sense for you and your pet.
Can I choose my veterinarian?
Yes! With an Optimum Wellness Plan or Banfield Access Plan, you can visit any Banfield Pet Hospital nationwide — and you’re welcome to request a specific veterinarian for each visit, depending on availability. Whether you prefer to see the same vet regularly or switch based on your schedule, you have the flexibility to choose what works best for you and your pet.
What if my pet needs care outside of the plan?
If your pet needs services that aren't included in your Optimum Wellness Plan or Banfield Access Plan, you’ll still receive a discount on nearly all other services offered at Banfield. Depending on your specific plan, that discount can range from 5% to 20%. This added savings helps make ongoing care more affordable, even beyond what’s included in your plan.
Enrollment and beyond
How do I enroll my pet?
We’re so glad you asked! You can start to enroll online for OWP (Banfield Access Plan is not currently available through online enrollment), call our client help line above, or make an appointment at a Banfield near you. No matter how you start enrollment, you will always confirm your pet’s enrollment and options at your selected Banfield location, so you can be sure you’re getting the right services for your furry friend.
Why do I only have 30 days to confirm enrollment?
Your quoted plan price estimates are only valid for 30 days, so we always ask you to make an appointment at your selected Banfield location before that time is up. If you miss your 30-day window, you can start enrollment again at any time.
If I enroll more than one pet, do I get a discount?
Yes! OWP members get $15 off each additional pet’s enrollment fee, applied when you confirm their enrollment at your Banfield location.
Why is there a one-time enrollment fee?
The set-up fee covers setting up and establishing your pet’s plan in our system. You can skip this fee for the next year by either signing up for automatic renewal with monthly payments, or by re-enrolling with full payment within 90 days of your pet’s last plan.
I started enrollment online, but now I want different choices — how do I change my pet’s OWP?
No worries! Your pet's OWP isn't final until you confirm it at your selected Banfield location. Just bring it up at your first appointment.
I started to enroll online but changed my mind – how do I cancel it?
No worries. Your enrollment expires if you don’t make an appointment to confirm that enrollment at your Banfield location within 30 days. Your card will not be charged.
My pet has passed away and I have an active plan. What do I do?
Because OWPs and Banfield Access Plan are packages of discounted veterinary services with payments spread out over 12 months, your pet may have received services with a retail value exceeding the payments you’ve made. If that’s the case, you may have an outstanding balance. Please call us at 1-888-649-2716 with any questions or to cancel your plan.
Can I cancel my pet's OWP at any time?
The short answer is yes, but you may have an outstanding balance.
Because our plans are packages of discounted veterinary services with payments spread out over 12 months, your pet may have received services with a retail value exceeding the payments you’ve made. If that's the case, you will need to either pay the retail value of those services and discounts used under the OWP less the amount of monthly payments made or make the remaining payments due under the plan — whichever is the least expensive.
