Ask a Vet Archive

When it comes to your pet's health, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Search questions real clients have submitted to our popular Ask a Vet Q&A series, and then submit a question of your own.

  • My cat is overweight, at about twenty pounds. What would be a good weight for her?

Obesity is one of the most common conditions that we see in pets. One of the best things that you can do to help keep your pet healthy is to make sure that they are at an appropriate weight for their body size. Without knowing your cat’s exact weight as well as not being able to perform an exam on your pet, I am unable to tell you what she should weigh.

When recommending an appropriate weight, we use a system called body condition scoring. This requires a physical exam to be performed on your pet. During the exam, we look at the height, length, and body mass of your pet.

I recommend that you take your pet into your veterinarian. They can examine your pet and let you know how much weight she needs to lose. They can also work with you on a weight loss plan that is specific to your pet. This ensures that she loses the weight in a healthy manner.
