Ask a Vet Archive

When it comes to your pet's health, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Search questions real clients have submitted to our popular Ask a Vet Q&A series, and then submit a question of your own.

  • My four-year-old dog has never had a teeth cleaning. At our last appointment, our vet recommended that we have her teeth cleaned professionally. Can you please give me some information regarding this procedure at your hospitals?

The dental cleaning procedure is an anesthetic procedure. During the procedure the teeth are cleaned both above and below the gum line. This removes any tartar and keeps the mouth healthy and pain free. This procedure is one of the best things that you can do for your pet’s long term health and comfort.

All Banfield hospitals run pre-anesthetic blood work the day of the procedure to make sure that the pet is healthy enough for the anesthesia. The dental cleaning is a same-day procedure. Your pet will need to be dropped off first thing in the morning and will go home that evening.

The cost of the procedure will vary depending on whether your pet needs any antibiotics, post-op pain meds, or any special procedures. If you have not used our hospitals before I recommend that you make an appointment with the hospital that you plan on using. This will allow you to meet the veterinarian that will be performing the procedure. They can also answer any questions that you have about the procedure at that time.
