Ask a Vet Archive

When it comes to your pet's health, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Search questions real clients have submitted to our popular Ask a Vet Q&A series, and then submit a question of your own.

  • My 19-year-old cat has pus coming out of her left ear and a very bad odor with it. The odor has been present for a few months now. Today, I could see it has affected her balance and that eye has started to droop or close. Is there anything I can do for her? Also, her voice has really changed to a low guttural meow.

You need to take your cat into see her veterinarian immediately. The pus and the smell usually indicate infection. With her balance affected, I am concerned that she has an infection of her inner ear.

An inner ear infection is serious and needs to be treated immediately. If not treated, the infection can cause permanent damage to her nerves and other structures that are in this area.
