Ask a Vet Archive

When it comes to your pet's health, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Search questions real clients have submitted to our popular Ask a Vet Q&A series, and then submit a question of your own.

  • For a few days now my potentially-pregnant cat has been scooting her backside across the floor and constantly licking that area. I thought it may be worms, but I haven't seen any in her stool. I've also noticed she's eating really well, but losing weight and has low energy.

I recommend that you take your cat into see your veterinarian immediately. The loss of weight and scooting is concerning especially if she is pregnant. Your veterinarian can examine your cat and let you know what may be causing her symptoms. They may need to perform a fecal exam where they look for evidence of worms under the microscope.

Many intestinal parasites can cause weight loss in cats. Most of these worms live in the small intestine and cannot be seen whole in the feces. The only way to diagnose them is to look for the microscopic eggs that they excrete.
