2020 Veterinary Emerging Topics (VET)® Report

In this year’s report, we focus on the importance of weight management in pets and the impact weight has on pet quality of life, mobility, activity, and comfort as it relates to osteoarthritis.

An Innovative Approach

Pet medical data of the adult dogs that visited a Banfield Pet hospital from 2016 through 2018 were analyzed using novel methodology (e.g., natural language processing, NLP) to identify adult dogs that were overweight, their success at losing at least 10% of their body weight after the initial overweight identification, and their success at maintaining that weight status.

Owners of overweight dogs were then randomly selected to participate in a survey to ascertain recommendations made by their veterinary team and the practices adopted, in order to identify which were associated with successful weight loss. To complement the owner survey, a survey of Banfield veterinarians and accredited veterinary technicians was conducted to understand their recommendations and perceived factors that affect owner engagement and success with the pet’s weight loss plan.
