2019 Veterinary Emerging Topics (VET)® Report

In this year’s report, we’re highlighting the management of osteoarthritis in overweight pets and exploring opportunities to improve care and outcomes for these pets in general veterinary practice.

In 2017, 51% of dogs and 41% of cats newly diagnosed with an osteoarthritic (OA) condition were also recorded as overweight or obese. We also found that many new OA cases are not receiving optimal management.

Our Methodology

We investigated patterns of diagnostic evaluation (beyond physical examination) and therapeutic management of newly diagnosed OA cases. A select group of Banfield veterinarians were surveyed to identify barriers to providing recommended care.
