PORTLAND, Ore. – October 29, 2009 – Banfield, The Pet Hospital® is now providing preventive healthcare to more than 1 million Pets through its Optimum Wellness Plans. Banfield has increased the number of Wellness Plan members by 50 percent over the past five years.

Wellness Plans are discounted packages of healthcare services that include the cost of preventive care Banfield veterinarians recommend Pets receive each year. Tailored to fit the age of the Pet (puppies, kittens and adult Pets) the plans include unlimited office calls, annual vaccinations, twice annual nose-to-tail comprehensive examinations, routine dental cleanings, and lab work, among other preventive care services. In addition to discounts on services not included, the Wellness Plans provide screening for numerous conditions that may adversely affect a Pet’s health and lifespan.

“We are truly honored that more than 1 million families have put their trust in Banfield,” said John Payne, president and chief executive officer of Banfield. “Our Optimum Wellness Plans have become overwhelmingly popular among our clients and hospital associates. Reaching 1 million active enrollments is a significant milestone for our practice and demonstrates that our message about the importance of preventive healthcare for Pets is taking root with families across the country.”

For every year a human ages, Pets age six to 10 years. This means that if an 8-year-old Pet goes without an annual wellness exam, he or she would compare to a 60-year-old person without medical, dental or optical care for 10 years. In that span of time, it is very likely that a human health condition could develop and go untreated; the same is true for Pets. Regular veterinary examinations, such as those included in Banfield’s Wellness Plans, help identify and address underlying health problems early which reduces the chance the problem will become chronic.

“Wellness plans are a great way to provide Pets with the preventive care they need for a long, happy life. And just as important, they offer our clients a way to control their Pets’ healthcare expenses,” said Karen Johnson, DVM, vice president and client advocate for Banfield. “Everyday our hospitals experience firsthand the positive effects the plans have made on the lives of Pets. It is these experiences that make our associates our greatest advocates for our plans; they are the reason our enrollments have grown by leaps and bounds.”

To date, more than 2.4 million Pets across the country have enrolled in the Wellness Plans. Pet owners can sign up for a plan at their local Banfield Pet hospital. Plans can be paid for in full annually or through low monthly payments. For the nearest Banfield hospital, visit www.banfield.net.
