Top five cat personality traits

Spend more than an hour with a cat and you’ll be picking up on some of their many personality traits. As any cat owner can tell you, a cat’s nature shines through the more time you spend with them. And by picking up on those behavior traits and understanding your feline friends better, you can even learn to build a more meaningful relationship with them.

Well, maybe. It’s worth a try, anyway, and who doesn’t want a better relationship with their cat? Plus, aren’t you in the mood for some lighthearted fun?

While every cat is unique, there are some personality profiles that we notice quite often. And they often transcend cat breed, coat type, nose boop-ability, etc. As you’ll see, these personality profiles are based on truth, even though this isn’t an exact science. Bet you recognize at least a couple of these. Maybe you’ve known one personally. Maybe she’s sitting on your lap right now. Lucky.

The curious cat

True to their name, curious cats are adventurous (and sometimes nosey) by nature. More active than other cats, these fabulous felines also tend to be more social around humans. But don’t be confused, they still enjoy a good cat nap.

The scaredy cat

Whether they’re afraid of the vacuum, loud noises, or simply a piece of dust, these cats are as adorable as they are high strung. Still, if the cat you love seems more fearful or consistently anxious than your average scaredy cat, reach out to your local Banfield Pet Hospital, because their behavior could be related to a health issue. We’re here to help.

The active cat

These kitties might have the “zoomies” one minute – running through the house, no plan, throwing caution to the wind – and the munchies the next. They might surprise you with a snuggle, then disappear for hours behind the couch. What are they up to? Unpredictable, capricious, funny, deep – these cats really keep you on your toes.

The queen or king cat

Regardless of their actual size, some housecats like to act more like big cats. Dominant and even a bit domineering, these cats often try to rule their house with an iron paw. While they might not be the friendliest cats, they can be as quirky and funny as any other. And deep down inside, they really do love you. Probably.

The best friend cat

Dogs get credit for being Man’s Best Friend (and Woman’s, too – come on, let’s bring that idiom into the 21st century for crying out loud), but some cats are so gregarious it feels like they’re everybody’s best friend. Does it make you jealous? Nah, they still love you the most. Especially since you feed them and clean their litter box. These cats love attention, love company, and love love. If your cat’s like this, expect cuddles.

Are there only five types of cats? Of course not. Just like human personalities, no cat personality fits perfectly into any single type. But when you have a sense of a particular cat’s specific character, you can be better prepared next time you interact with them. Like, maybe, don’t get too close to your queen cat’s favorite toy and you should be just fine.
