Ask a Vet Archive

When it comes to your pet's health, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Search questions real clients have submitted to our popular Ask a Vet Q&A series, and then submit a question of your own.

  • I just adopted a 3-5 month old female puppy. At what age should we have her spayed? What age should she have her first vaccination shots?

Puppies can start their vaccination series of vaccinations as early as 7-8 weeks of age and boostering every 3-4 weeks until they are between 14 and 16 weeks of age. Because some of the vaccines are in combination and others are separate the best thing to do is have the veterinarian go over a vaccination schedule with you that lists out the different things he or she needs.

There are a couple vaccines that may or may not be recommended depending on where you life and the type of lifestyle your dog will lead (i.e. house dog vs. out and about). The neuter or spay is usually done after the last vaccines have been completed. Again, the doctor can go over everything with you.

Banfield hospitals are full service, provide preventive care, treatment of ill and injured pets and surgical and dental procedures. Banfield offers a very unique optimum wellness plan for puppies that includes all the preventive care and the neuter so be sure to ask about that when you go.

I hope this information is what you were looking for. Congratulations on your new pet!
