• We are scheduled to pick up a golden retriever puppy from a reputable breeder on Sunday. We have a new puppy appointment at Banfield, Monday morning. I just found out that the puppys father is a carrier of ichthyosis. The breeder is DNA testing the litter now. If our puppy has ichthyosis, would we be well advised not to accept her? Thanks, Jim Harold

    Hi Jim,
I recommend that you talk about your individual puppy's DNA test with your local veterinarian. This is a recessive disease so if your pet is only a carrier things should be okay. However, if your puppy tests positive that is a more difficult decision. In these cases it can sometimes be managed but in other cases it may have more serious issues. Your vet can talk to you more about the potential treatment options and the risks for your individual puppy.
