• My pet has diarrhea, and it looks like there is blood in it. Is this serious?

Bloody diarrhea is a serious concern that needs the attention of a veterinarian.  Diarrhea tainted with blood can be a symptom of many things, including but not limited to:

    • Bacterial or viral infections
    • Foreign body
    • Diet
    • Parasites
    • Disease
    • Stress

Diarrhea on its own can be the sign of something very serious and can quickly lead to dehydration. With the addition of blood in your pet’s stool, it could be a very serious situation. It is highly recommended that you take your dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible so that he or she can be accurately diagnosed and appropriately treated.

Should you find blood in your dog’s stool, contact your local Banfield Pet Hospital to schedule an appointment with a veterinarian.
