This is a question you should ask your veterinarian and will depend somewhat on the way the doctor closed the incision in the skin. In general, the cone should stay on until stitches are removed. The purpose of the collar is to prevent the dog from licking or chewing at the incision and either opening it up (requiring another surgery), licking it excessively and causing severe inflammation or possibly an infection. Please call your veterinarian.
