• My pup is a chihuahua dachshund mix and has trouble sleeping and whines all night, even after I've worn him out. I have his crate in my room, and I usually ignore the whining until it subsides. But lately, it's become much worse and I haven't slept in 2 days. Is it okay to give my pup melatonin to help with sleeping? If so, how should I dose it? I've been told it's okay to do so, but wanted a vet's opinion. Thank you.

    Hi Raysa,
I recommend that you talk to your local veterinarian about this question. The whining at night can be a behavioral issue but it can also have underlying medical causes. I do not recommend giving melatonin unless directed to do so by your vet. The safety of this will depend on your pup’s size and overall health. If medication is needed there may be a safer alternative that can be used. Your vet knows your pet’s medical history and they will be able to give you the best advice on this.
