Ask a Vet Archive

When it comes to your pet's health, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Search questions real clients have submitted to our popular Ask a Vet Q&A series, and then submit a question of your own.

  • Can pink eye be transferred from dogs to humans, or from dogs to one another? My 8-year-old dog has recently had a pink eye with mucous and eye gunk, and now my 1-year-old dog has the same thing. They don't seem to be itching it too much, but they do seem more tired then usual. Could this be pink eye? Thanks!

I recommend that you take both dogs to see your veterinarian immediately. The eye discharge and lethargy is concerning. Your veterinarian can let you know what is causing the symptoms that you are describing.

Dogs can get eye infections or conjunctivitis like pink eye. However, it is very rare for them to pass anything on to humans. Your veterinarian can give you more information on whether you should be concerned after they examine your pets.
