Ask a Vet Archive

When it comes to your pet's health, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Search questions real clients have submitted to our popular Ask a Vet Q&A series, and then submit a question of your own.

  • I have a one-year-old male dwarf hamster that has a bump on his tummy. It looks like a scab where his belly button would be, and the area around it is bald because he scratches it so much. What I can do for him?

I recommend that you have your hamster seen by a veterinarian. Itching in hamsters can be caused by a few different things. With the baldness and the scab present, it concerns me that it will only get worse if not treated.

Your veterinarian can examine your hamster and let you know what may be causing the itching. The treatment that he needs will depend on the cause of the itching.
