Ask a Vet Archive

When it comes to your pet's health, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Search questions real clients have submitted to our popular Ask a Vet Q&A series, and then submit a question of your own.

  • I feed my dogs grain free food. A friend of mines dog just had congestive heart failure and her vet told her it was caused from feeding him grain free dog food. Then someone shared a post on Facebook about a different instance. Is this accurate?? Thank you for your response.

    Hi Joan,
I recommend that you talk to your veterinarian about this question. They know your pet and can give you the best advice of the risk for your individual pet. I have heard that there have been some instances of dogs developing heart failure while on grain free diets. I have not seen clinical research on this or information on specific diets. Without that research I can’t say for certain that a grain free diet is a risk. Your vet knows your pet’s health history so they can give you the best advice on this.
