Ask a Vet Archive

When it comes to your pet's health, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Search questions real clients have submitted to our popular Ask a Vet Q&A series, and then submit a question of your own.

  • Have a dog who has a grade 2-3 heart murmur and she has been coughing lately like hacking up a fur ball and now having slight labored breathing with 28bpm. I know this is concerning but is it technically an emergency. Having trouble getting into my local Banfield and now have to find local vet.

    Hi Anne,
I recommend that you take her into see a veterinarian as soon as possible even if that is not your usual vet. The coughing and labored breathing are concerning especially with her history of a heart murmur. If these symptoms worsen or if you feel that she is struggling to breathe, this should be thought of as an emergency and she should be taken into see a veterinarian immediately. Your vet can recommend the treatment that she needs after they have examined her.
