Dr. Abernethy graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, finishing his clinical year at the University of Georgia. He then completed a one year internship at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in small ruminant medicine and surgery. Dr. Abernethy practiced large animal medicine in the Tidewater area for 12 years working on various species of animals including horses, cattle, sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, emus, dogs, cats, and the occasional zoo animal. Dr. Abernethy has a special interest in preventive medicine and dentistry. He lives at his farm and currently helps take care of 30+ horses. He also has 12 cats, 4 dogs, 4 ducks, and a chinchilla, and 2 small ponds containing numerous species of fish. Outside of work, Dr. Abernethy enjoys fishing, gardening, landscaping, skeet/target shooting, restoring antique farm tractors, going to the beach/mountains, playing fetch with his 2 Labradors, and collecting old duck decoys.
