Veterinary Career Path: Create Your Own Story

Career paths are described in a variety of ways: climbing the ladder, taking the path less chosen—the list goes on and on. For women in veterinary medicine, especially in leadership roles, it can often be best described as a jungle gym—a path name that was coined by Sheryl Sandberg to illustrate the occasional detours and dead ends that one may find while searching for their dream job.

It’s no secret that women are entering the veterinary profession at much higher rates than men, quickly changing the profession from a male to a female dominated world in the timeframe of just a few decades. Along with this gender shift comes new leadership barriers as more and more women seek leadership positions while juggling full schedules, families and a deep underlying passion for pets.

The Women’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative (WVLDI) is dedicated to helping women as they seek and achieve leadership positions within veterinary medicine. At this year’s CVC Conventions in Virginia Beach, Kansas City and San Diego, Banfield Pet Hospital is sponsoring the WVLDI track.

Our own regional medical director Dr. Kimberly-Ann Therrien will be joining the discussion in Virginia Beach, sharing her own person struggles with balancing leadership and family, imposter syndrome and much more.

In addition to providing attendees with leadership skills, the track will provide an honest and frank framework for veterinary professionals to talk about their struggles and support each other while navigating the jungle gym that is leadership within veterinary medicine.

If you’re attending CVC Virginia Beach be sure to sign up for the WVLDI practice management track on Sunday, May 15. Stay tuned for an interview with Dr. Kimberly-Ann Therrien which we will be posting after the convention.
