Banfield Donates $10,000 to Assist with Haiti Relief Efforts for Pets

January 21, 2010 • Portland, Ore.

PORTLAND, Ore.—January 21, 2010—In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti last week, Banfield, The Pet Hospital® provided $10,000 of monetary relief and aid to benefit the large companion Pet population of the affected nation. Banfield’s donation, made through the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF), benefits the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) relief efforts. Once humanitarian rescue efforts are controlled, veterinarians through the AVMF provide emergency relief to Haitian Pets, as part of its Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams (VMAT).

“Our hearts go out to the Haitian people, including the Pets in their lives. As a veterinary practice, we know the important role Pets and animals plays in the lives of families. We also understand that in Haiti, there is both a large companion Pet population as well as a substantial animal agriculture population. Because we are unable to directly offer our medical services to the Pets in Haiti, we’ve decided to provide financial support to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation as they already have efforts underway,” said Jeffrey Klausner, DVM, MS, DACVIM, senior vice president and chief medical officer (CMO) of Banfield, The Pet Hospital. “What happened in Haiti is heartbreaking—we can only hope that our support will help bring a little relief, comfort and medical support to those who are enduring this tragedy.”

As a part of the Mars family of businesses, several of Mars fellow business segments also made donations totaling $465,000 to the American Red Cross and Search Dog Foundation and Humane Society International. In addition, both Banfield and Mars have encouraged their associates to make individual donations of their own to these and other rescue and relief organizations.
