PORTLAND, Ore.—February 18, 2010— Banfield, The Pet Hospital® today announced Phil Freeman as its new senior vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) as elected by Banfield’s parent company, Medical Management International (MMI) Board of Directors and Mars Inc.

Since joining Banfield in 2003 Freeman successfully maneuvered various roles with increasing responsibility within the finance arena, allowing him to effectively manage financial and strategic planning for the practice’s growth. Freeman also played a key role in the successful transition of the practice to Mars Inc. ownership.

Freeman’s educational achievements include a master’s degree in accountancy from Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management, as well as a certified public accountant certification from the Oregon State Board of Accountancy.

“For the past six years, Phil Freeman has been an integral part of our Finance team—his promotion to CFO was a natural fit,” said John Payne, Banfield’s president and chief executive officer. “Throughout his career, Phil has demonstrated a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility and business process improvement. I am confident in his ability to ensure the financial security and growth of our practice.”

Freeman’s promotion to his new role coincides with the retirement of Alan Stewart, who served Mars Inc. for 31 dedicated years, including the last seven at Banfield. Stewart became part of Banfield in July 2002 as the executive vice president and chief administrative officer/chief financial officer.

“Alan was a cornerstone of our practice in many ways,” said Payne. “His knowledge and experience were instrumental in the success of the practice—we will miss him greatly and we wish him happiness in his retirement.”
