Putting knowledge into practice

Banfield Applied Research & Knowledge (BARK) is responsible for generating new knowledge in support of evidence-based medicine by conducting population-based research on medical records produced in Banfield hospitals. Research by the team supports the highest quality veterinary care by using electronic medical data, from two and half million pets, captured annually in PetWare® (Banfield’s centralized medical record database) for retrospective and prospective research.

Banfield's unique medical record database lends itself to an evidence-based approach to medicine, which allows us to make recommendations on the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of particular diseases.

Research findings are disseminated to Banfield veterinarians, the veterinary profession and consumers through Web-based communications, continuing education events, peer-reviewed publications, white papers and our own Banfield Journal.

Knowledge is powerful, but the real opportunity to effect change comes from sharing knowledge and facilitating its application. Even small improvements, when spread over a large enough population, can have a profound impact on health.
