Anesthesia for General Practice
Overview
This is a general overview of anesthesia including mortality and morbidity statistics for small animal practice from a review of case complications from 100,000 anesthesia procedures. The introduction will show the necessity of an anesthesia protocol system.
The physical exam and pre-operative blood work will be reviewed as it pertains to anesthesia. Many important points will be noted which increase the safety for general anesthesia of the small animal patient. The review will also point out abnormalities that if not pursued can result in serious problems during anesthesia and the recovery period.
The following Banfield anesthesia protocols will be reviewed:
- Fractious Pet, Healthy Pet, Hepatic, Renal, CNS/Eye/Globe, Orthopedic, Diabetic, Abdominal and Pulmonary.
- The monitoring and emergency protocols in conjunction with the autonomic nervous system.
- Analgesics as they pertain to anesthesia to include risk factors for using/not using.
