Ectropion, Entropion

Ectropion and entropion are abnormalities of the eyelids. Ectropion is a rolling out, and entropion is a rolling in of the eyelid. The abnormalities can be inherited, congenital, or acquired from disease or injury.

With ectropion (rolling out), sensitive structures of the eye are more exposed to injury or irritants such as dust and other foreign matter. This may lead to more serious eye problems.

In severe or long standing cases of entropion (rolling in), the eye lashes can cause pain, permanent damage and vision loss by rubbing on the cornea, or front, of the eyeball.

Diagnosis is based on symptoms, examination findings and eye tests.

Treatment may be medical or surgical, depending on the type, cause, and severity of eyelid abnormality. Often, ectropion and entropion can only be corrected by surgical means.

IMPORTANT POINTS

  • Use all medications as directed by your veterinarian.
  • Follow all post surgical or aftercare instructions. An Elizabethan (cone shaped) collar is usually needed after surgery.
  • DO NOT allow your pet to rub or paw at the eye - this will damage sensitive eye tissue
  • Monitor your pet's progress carefully and have him/her rechecked as directed by your veterinarian.
