BANFIELD, THE PET HOSPITAL® ADDS PROHEART 6® TO FORMULARY IN AN EFFORT TO INCREASE COMPLIANCE; REDUCE HEARTWORM DISEASE
Portland, Ore. (August 9, 2010) – Banfield, The Pet Hospital® is now offering ProHeart 6®, an injectable six-month heartworm preventive, throughout its hospitals nationwide. ProHeart 6 is the only heartworm preventive in the United States that ensures dogs are continuously protected against heartworm disease for six months; following a single dose and is designed to be administered exclusively by a veterinarian for professional control of a Pet’s health.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted many of the previous restrictions for ProHeart 6 based on extensive data reviews and research showing its efficacy and safety. With these updates, Banfield reintroduced this unique product to its formulary to help the practice protect more dogs from heartworm disease.
“When you realize that compliance rates with most oral heartworm preventives are less than 50 percent, an injectable six-month preventive will have a significant impact on the prevalence of this devastating disease,” said Jeffrey Klausner, DVM, MS, DACVIM, senior vice president and chief medical officer for Banfield. “As a whole, ProHeart 6 ties in nicely with our approach to preventive care—not only will it significantly enhance our ability to prevent the disease but the biannual administration of ProHeart 6 fits in well with our client recommendation of biannual comprehensive examinations.”
The American Heartworm Society (AHS) recently issued new guidelines in which they recommend year-round chemoprophylaxis in all areas of the United States to reduce the reservoir heartworm population. According to the AHS, heartworm disease in dogs has been diagnosed in all 50 states and is considered at least regionally endemic in each of the adjacent 48 states, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.
“Offering ProHeart 6 in our hospital places the responsibility of heartworm prevention on our hospital associates and ultimately relies less on the client to remember to provide a monthly preventive,” said Klausner. “This gives our practice the opportunity to improve client adherence, and a real chance at decreasing the number of dogs that will be infected with heartworms. Overall, our ultimate goal is to significantly reduce the prevalence of heartworm infection in dogs in the United States—offering ProHeart 6 in our hospitals is a giant leap towards accomplishing that goal.”
ProHeart 6 is available for dog’s older than six months; the price varies by market as well as the dog’s weight. In addition, Banfield’s Optimum Wellness Plan members receive a 10, 15 or 20 percent discount on ProHeart 6 injections, depending on their plan level.
